1. Although the word tourist has negative connotations for many people, Janet loves being a tourist and having tourists visit the United States. She has driven across the U.S. twice, crossed it by rail once, and visited the following countries: Canada, Scotland, England, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Austria, Norway, the Netherlands. Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Malawi, Zambia, India, and Thailand.

2. Other famous people from Hicksville, New York, include the musician Billy Joel and the actress Lorraine Bracco (Dr. Melfi on The Sopranos).

3. Janet is the first cousin of one of the world's greatest athletes: the late Susan Butcher, a musher (dogsled racer) and four-time winner of the Iditarod race. Do you see a family resemblance?

4. Janet's sometimes-home of Gloucester, Massachusetts, has been home to many other writers, including Virginia Lee Burton, Vincent Ferrini, JoeAnn Hart, and Charles Olson. The books Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling and The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger are both about Gloucester's fishing industry.

5. During her career as a textbook editor, Janet worked on the second edition of The Riverside Shakespeare, the most popular one-volume Shakespeare collection in the world.
